Despite the low value of its basic products, the crushed rock industry is a major contributor to and an indicator of the economic well being of the nation. Industry consolidation is on the rise as large producers buyout the smaller producers. Individual crushed-stone quarries range in size from 50,000 to 10 million tons of product annually.Both the operations of quarrying and crushing being a hazard to environment as well as to human beings, they require continuous monitoring of the workplace as well as the workers. Mining operations cause deforestation, loss of vegetation, soil erosion, ground water level changes and pollution, which can lead to an ecological imbalance.
Stone crushing in india is basically a labor intensive small scale industry, where most of the operations are performed manually.Very little information is currently available regarding dust emissions from these units, associated occupational exposures, and the baseline respiratory health status of workers. During the stone crushing operation, large size stone,mined from quarries in the size range of 200-300 mm, is crushed to smaller usable sizes, generally 6, 12, or 25 mm. Many crushed stone operations tend to be located relatively near populated areas or on the highways to avoid high transportation costs.
